YOU DON'T HAVE TO “GET READY” FOR BJJ

YOU JUST HAVE TO START

It's easy to put off trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Maybe you think you need to get fitter first. Maybe you've never done a martial art before. Or perhaps BJJ looks interesting, but walking into a room full of people who already know what they're doing feels intimidating. The reality is much simpler. Everyone starts as a beginner.

Your first few sessions aren't about proving how fit, strong or capable you are. They're about learning something new, getting comfortable on the mats and seeing whether BJJ is something you enjoy. And if it is, everything else develops from there.

MORE THAN JUST A WORKOUT

TRAIN YOUR BODY. CHALLENGE YOUR MIND. LEARN SOMETHING USEFUL.

BJJ gives you something many workouts don't. You're not just exercising, you're learning techniques, solving problems and developing skills every time you train.

  • Functional fitness and strength

  • Practical grappling and self-defence skills

  • Better movement and body awareness

  • Confidence under pressure

  • Mental focus and problem-solving

  • A challenging way to switch off from everyday life

And because there's always something new to learn, training doesn't quickly become repetitive.

WHAT HAPPENS IN YOUR FIRST CLASS?

We Keep the First Step Simple

Your first class is simply an opportunity to experience Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and see whether it's right for you.

You won't be expected to already understand techniques, know the terminology or keep up with experienced students. You'll be welcomed into the session, introduced to how the class works and given the opportunity to start learning at a level appropriate to your experience.

There is nothing you need to prove. Everyone on the mat had a first class once.

Come in, experience BJJ and see what you think. No pressure to join afterwards.

For your first class, just wear comfortable sports clothing. You don't need to buy a Gi or any specialist equipment before trying BJJ.

COMMON QUESTIONS BEFORE STARTING BJJ

I've never done martial arts before. Can I really start BJJ?

Yes. Complete beginners regularly start at Centre Line, and several of our members specifically mention beginning with no previous BJJ or martial arts experience.

Do I need to get fit before I start?

No. You can start from your current fitness level and allow your conditioning to develop through training.

Is Centre Line very competitive or intimidating?

There are people who enjoy competing, but competition isn't a requirement. Our reviews repeatedly describe Centre Line as friendly, welcoming, supportive and suitable for beginners.

I'm nervous about turning up on my own. Is that normal?

Absolutely. Starting any new activity can feel uncomfortable at first. Everyone you train with was once the new person walking through the door for their first class.

Is BJJ just about fighting?

No. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a technical grappling martial art. Training combines movement, technique, strategy, problem-solving and controlled physical resistance.

Do I have to spar?

Live training is an important part of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, but your development should happen progressively. You do not need to arrive ready to prove yourself against experienced students.

Is BJJ good for fitness?

BJJ is physically demanding and develops functional strength, cardiovascular fitness, movement and conditioning while you're learning a skill.

Do I have to compete?

No. Some members enjoy competition, while many train simply because they enjoy BJJ, want to keep fit, learn new skills or be part of the community.
